Finding reliable and stable freelance work may seem like an impossibility, especially if you’re like me, who has been working in the corporate world since graduating from university. But the pandemic has somehow accelerated things, forcing workers and companies to find ways to make themselves ready for remote work

Whether you're just looking for a simple side hustle or want to totally go a different path, career-wise, freelancing and remote work offer the most flexibility and opportunity.

But what skills do you need to make it in the wild world of remote work?

Some hot skills right now include copywriting, SEO, social media management, and web development. And if you're ready to make a go of freelancing, be sure to build a killer portfolio, network with fellow freelancers, and set boundaries with your clients so you can work on your own terms.

Here are three of the most popular platforms for short-term projects and freelance work available today.

Upwork

With over 12 million freelancers and over 5 million clients, Upwork is one of the largest freelance marketplaces in the world. It offers a wide variety of job categories, including web development, writing, design, and marketing. Upwork allows freelancers to create a profile, apply for jobs, and communicate with clients all in one place. Upwork also offers payment protection for both freelancers and clients.

This is one of the platforms I used when I started dipping my feet in the world of freelancing. It used to be called Odesk, and even then it was competitive. I’ve earned quite a bit from the platform and payment options are good. I’ve tried direct bank transfers and Paypal, and both have worked and gone through. Fees are steep though, especially for Paypal.

Fiverr

One of the newest freelancing platforms out there, Fiverr has exploded on the scene. It has over 3 million active buyers, or potential clients, and is a great platform for freelancers looking to start small and build up their business

What sets Fiverr apart from other freelance marketplaces is that it operates on a "gig" system, where freelancers offer specific services starting at just $5. Freelancers can also offer additional services or packages at higher rates.

If you want short, fast work that you can compound, Fiverr is a great place to start.

Freelancer.com

Similar to Upwork, Freelancer.com is a global marketplace for freelance services. It offers a wide variety of job categories, from data entry to web development to legal services. Freelancers can create a profile, bid on jobs, and communicate with clients through the platform.

Freelancer.com also offers a contest system, where clients can submit a project and have freelancers compete to win the job. This can be a great way for freelancers to build their portfolio and reputation on the platform.

Jobs here have higher rates than Upwork, but you’ll find the competition really stiff.

But the million-dollar question is what skills do you need to become a remote work superstar?

In-Demand Skills

It's no secret that the world of remote work has become super competitive, so it's important to stay on top of the latest trends and technologies. However, there are skills that are always in demand and particularly hot right now.

Copywriting: The art of crafting compelling content that sells. From web copy to email marketing to social media posts, copywriting is a skill that every remote worker should have in their arsenal.

Another way to make money online is setting up your own business. Now, there are many ways you can go about this, but if it were me, I’d start with something that I’m passionate with. There are different ways to take this passion to the online business level.

E-commerce: selling your products or services online, whether that’s handmade crafts, food and snacks, or digital products like online courses or ebooks.

Affiliate Marketing: In affiliate marketing you promote other people's products and earn a commission for each sale made through your affiliate link. You don’t have to make your own products or have an inventory. It’s hard work at first, but it can become a great source of passive income later on.

Blogging: I did try this in my earlier year. LOL. I did not make a lot of money but I did make some. Plus I get invited to blogging events that allow me to connect with brands and get products to take home. Dropshipping: It's a popular online business model where the seller doesn't actually keep the products in stock, but instead, they partner with a supplier who ships the products directly to the customer. You can create an online store, and when someone purchases a product (with your profit margin included in the price) from your store, you place an order with your supplier, who then ships the product directly to the customer.

So you're ready to take the plunge and start an online business. Congratulations! It's a wild and wonderful world out there, but fear not - with these tips, you'll be on your way to online success in no time.

First things first, let's do some recon. Research your market and make sure there's a demand for what you're selling. You don't want to be the only one at the party with no dance partner. Get to know your target audience and give them what they want.
